A genus of small, Gram-negative, non-motile coccoid or rod-shaped bacteria which are parasites and pathogens of various species of mammal, especially cattle and pigs, and can be transmitted from livestock to humans in infected milk or meat or by contact with infected animals; (also brucella) a bacterium of this genus.
