Any of several New Zealand evergreen shrubs or small trees of the genera Pittosporum (family Pittosporaceae) and Myrsine (family Myrsinaceae); especially (more fully "black matipo") P. tenuifolium, with black bark and clusters of dark purple flowers, and (more fully "red matipo") M. australis, with dark red bark.
