People around the world play Wordle-like games every day. Some players make their first guess when they wake up to a new puzzle and enter words throughout the day. Others will not move on with their morning until they find the secret answer. In NYT Wordle, players have six guesses to determine a five-letter word. There are no hints or definitions involved. Instead, the game reveals information as you guess. If you put a letter in the word in the right spot, the game will change the color of the square to green. A yellow square means your letter is part of the word but in the wrong place.
With only six guesses, a strategic starting word is essential to your best performance. In the early stages, you want to eliminate as many letters as possible, so focus on words with five different letters. You will also want to start with some of the more common letters in the alphabet like R, S, T, A, and E. Words like STARE, CRANE, and TRACE are popular choices. If your first word comes up empty, your second word must incorporate a different letter group: MOUND, CLOUD, and BROIL.
Many words begin with the letter S. For your opening guess, focus on words with five different letters like SPECK, SILKY, and SWAMP. S words can be tricky because there are plenty of five-letter words that include more than one S: SMASH, SALSA, and SASSY.
Some players like to start with a more common letter than C. However, there are plenty of potential answers that begin with it: CRACK, CATCH, CRATE, and COACH.
An A in a yellow square poses a problem. You might assume it will be somewhere in the middle of the word, but the Wordle dictionary has many answers that start with the letter: ANGRY, AWAKE, ALBUM, and ALIVE.
We can begin with START for this family of words. Other potential answers include STORM, STRIP, STEAM, and STAND.
The SH combination is normally followed by a vowel as in the words SHOCK, SHOWY, SHIRT, SHEER, and SHEET. However, there are a few SHR answers: SHRUB, SHREW, and SHRUG.
The SHA combination has the potential to break your heart. Imagine having four out of five letters with green squares: SHA_E. You could quickly go through your guesses without success since several common words use that combination: SHAKE, SHALE, SHARE, SHAME, SHADE, SHAVE, and SHAPE. At this point, all you can do is try your best.
