Words Ending in J, Q, V, End, and How

The J, Q, and V tiles in games like Scrabble and Words With Friends are notoriously tough to play. Sure, there's JO, which is great for hooking, or QI and ZA. But, if the tiles don't lie right, what kind of words end in V, Q, or J?

Which words end with END?

Most of these words ending in END are either bingoes or six letters long. For every SPEND, UPEND, and WEND, there are twice as many longer words. They include: DIVIDEND, REVEREND, PORTEND, DESCEND, and BARTEND, among three dozen others.

Which words end with HOW?

There aren't many. Some of the long words include ROADSHOW, PEEPSHOW, SALCHOW, and AIRSHOW. There are only three four-letter words that end with HOW: SHOW, DHOW, and CHOW.

Which three-letter words end in J?

There are only three three-letter words ending in J. They are: RAJ, HAJ, and TAJ. In fact, there are only seven words in total that end in J. the other four are: HADJ, HAJI, SVARAJ, and SWARAJ. The three-letter words are good for getting rid of the J in the end game when you don't have an O to make JO.

Other Words Ending with Tough Letters

The V is a contradiction. It's enticing because of its four-point worth, but it's difficult to use effectively. It pays to know some good words ending with V. While you may never play leitmotiv, you are sure to play vav, shiv, perv, and improv in many games. Late-game words are usually low-scoring, but knowing these V words is a good way to score between eight and 12 points while getting the high-scoring V out of your rack before you get stuck with it when your opponent goes out.

How about words ending in Q? Well, there are only three, which is unsurprising because the Q is one of the least flexible tiles in crossword games. Those three words are: suq, tranq, and umiaq. None of these words scores particularly well unless you get the Q on a premium square, but as should be borne in the mind of all crossword game players, the Q is to be played as soon as possible. Not only is it difficult to play, it's very tough to use in a bingo.

We've already talked about words ending in J. Which other letters present a problem? The K goes with the C and makes thousands of words ending in either -ick, -ack, -eck, -ock, or -uck. There are even roughly 100 words that end in Z! So, the words ending in J, words ending in Q, and words that end with V are the best ones to know to keep an edge over your opponents in Scrabble, Words With Friends, or other jumble solvers and crossword games.

FAQ Words That End In

  • How many words end with each letter in English?

The pattern looks quite different from starting letters. E is the most common ending by far, thanks to silent-e spellings and everyday words like "use," "time," and "care." S is a close second, driven by plurals and verbs like "runs," "does," and "goes." T, D, N, G, Y, and R also close out large numbers of words. At the other end, very few English words end in J, Q, V, or U, and even Z and X are far less common as endings than S or E. So while several consonants can plausibly finish a word, most of the weight sits on just a handful of vowels and soft consonants.

  • What are the most common words in English by ending letter?

Everyday function words carry most endings: "the" and "have" for E, "and" and "would" for D, "in" and "on" for N, "is" and "as" for S, "for" and "her" for R, "with" and "which" for H, "but" and "it" for T. Rarer endings lean on their own small set of common words, like "quiz" for Z or "flu" for U. For the full ranked list under any single letter, see that letter's dedicated page.

  • What words end with rare letters like J, Q, V, X, Z, and U?

These are the flip side of rare starting letters. J almost never ends an English word outside loanwords like "raj" and "swaraj." Q is rarer still, since virtually no standalone English word ends in Q; it mostly survives in borrowed phrases like "coq au vin." V-endings are mostly informal or borrowed too, such as "spiv," "rev," and "guv." X actually closes out plenty of everyday words, including "box," "fix," "six," and "tax." Z shows up in "quiz," "buzz," "jazz," and "fez," while U ends words like "flu," "emu," "menu," and "guru."

  • How do I find words that end with specific letter combinations?

Use our word finder. Enter the closing letters in the ends with field, like "ing," "tion," "ly," or "ed," and you get every matching word, filterable by length. It's the fastest way to solve Scrabble racks, Wordle guesses, or crossword answers when you know how a word finishes but not how it starts.
