Originally: a Covenanter from the West of Scotland, especially one who participated in the 1648 raid on Edinburgh. Later more generally (depreciative): any Covenanter; a Scottish Presbyterian (especially of the 17th and early 18th centuries).
A nickname for: a member or supporter of the Whig Party; = "Whig". Sometimes also: (a nickname for) a person who supported the exclusion of James, Duke of York, from the succession to the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland on account of his Roman Catholicism; = "Whig".
