Originally: an ulcer of the nose (or, rarely, other part of the body), especially when accompanied by a fetid discharge; any of various conditions characterized by the presence of such a lesion. Later: specifically a chronic disease of the nose characterized by atrophy of the nasal mucosa and bone, with a thick secretion that forms dry, extremely fetid crusts, often associated with the presence of bacteria of the genus Klebsiella.
