Small articles, typically of ivory or bone, decorated with engraved designs, originally produced (especially from whalebone or whales' teeth) by seamen employed on whaling ships, as a means of passing the time during long voyages; = "scrimshaw". Now only attributive in "scrimshandy work", in the same sense.
